Nokias Android handset coming at MWC this month

Nokias next big step to the smartphones industry, with its previously talked and leaked handset powered with Googles platform, Android is nearing to its launch, reportedly pretty soon, this very month.

According to the words coming in from The Wall Street Journal, the Finnish manufactured Android smartphone, codenamed internally as Normandy is to make its official debut later this month at their Mobile World Congress event, which is to take place on 24th of February, between 8:30 and 9:30 AM local time, in Barcelona, Spain.

As we read on their article further, people familiar with the story stated to the source that the new Nokia Android phone will be entirety different from any other Android OEMs from the current market, where the Normandy or Nokia X users will not be given any kind of access to Google developed features and other Android applications from the Google Play stream. It is also read that the phone will come pre-installed with digital services crafted by Nokia and Microsoft, including the companys own Here mapping, MixRadio music streaming services and Nokia application portal. But until we see anything bona fide, we do know how to treat these news with the taste of gossips.

Android 4 4 KitKat tips tricks and secrets

Android 4.4 is the most polished and feature-rich iteration of Googles mobile OS yet, and comes with plenty of new and exciting functions to keep fans happy. However, not all of them are immediately obvious from the start.

Allow us to educate you on some of the most interesting and useful tips, tricks and secrets hiding in the software. Grab yourself a hot beverage, find a comfortable seat and prepare to taste the future of smartphone software.

18) Fire up Google Now with just your voice

Its possible to activate Google Now - Androids answer to Siri - simply by saying "OK Google". When youre on the home screen, simply utter those two words and youll be prompted to speak your next command, which can be anything from asking for Google to search the web to setting an alarm for a particular time. Just be wary of any annoying friends shouting the same phrase when youre trying to do other things on your phone.

17) Switch on Developer Mode

Developer mode used to be a part of Androids settings menu that was easily accessible, but recently Google has hidden it away to prevent users from tinkering too much. However, its still fairly easy to discover if you know what youre doing - go to Settings > About Phone and then tap the "Build Number" section seven times. This will unlock the developer menu, allowing you to access a whole number of nerdy features.

16) Taste the next generation with ART runtime

Android uses Dalvik runtime by default, which is described as a "just in time" compiler. That means it does all of the application processing as and when its required. Moving forward, Google is looking to use ART runtime, which is a "ahead of time" compiler. ART is actually featured in Android 4.4 already, but its not enabled by default - youll need to enter the Developer menu to switch it on.

Your handset will reboot and it will take a short time to recompile your apps - you may even notice some stability issues - but on the whole, ART should be quicker and friendly on your battery. As more apps are optimised to use ART, youll find it more beneficial to use.

15) Use Wi-Fi to determine your location to save battery

Previously with Android, determining your location was based almost solely on GPS, which consumes a fair amount of battery life. Android 4.4 now comes with three modes for this functionality.

High accuracy uses GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile network signal to get a fix on where you are, while Device Only relies totally on GPS. In the middle there is Battery Saving mode, which abandons GPS and uses Wi-Fi and your mobile network - amazingly, this is still pretty precise, and doesnt drink as much juice. Go to Settings > Location > Mode to pick the one that suits you.

14) Keep track of your movements each day

Another cool Android 4.4 feature is the power to track the steps you take each day, as well as differentiate between walking, running, cycling and climbing. This ability hasnt been leveraged as much as you might expect, and only a few apps make use of it right now.

One is the highly polished Moves app from ProtoGeo, which tracks your movements and gives you data on how many steps youve taken, as well as a visual "storyline" of your daily life.

13) Exit immersive mode

One of the new features of Android 4.4 is the "immersive" mode, which basically removes all of the on-screen interface to give you an unimpeded view on your current application. Apps that support immersive mode should automatically remove UI elements, but if you want to get them back, simply swipe down from the top of the display - the notifications bar will magically re-appear.

12) Install an alternative SMS client

Hangouts replaces the default SMS client in Android 4.4, and while it does the job perfectly well - integrating instant messaging and text chats - some people will no doubt long for the old way of doing things.

Thankfully, its possible to specify a different app for SMS messages. Find one that you like on the Google Play market, install it and then go to the Settings menu within Hangouts. Tap SMS and then SMS Enabled, and youll be able to select the app you want to use.

11) Record your phones screen

Taking a screenshot in Android used to be like pulling teeth - you had to connect your phone to your PC in order to grab any kind of on-screen image. Since Android 4.0, weve had the trusty "Volume down and Power button" combo, but 4.4 goes to the next level - it features the ability to record video from your screen as well.

As it is primarily aimed at developers who want to add video to their app listings, taking advantage of this native feature is quite tricky - youll need to follow these incredibly detailed instructions - but its a smart bonus nonetheless.

10) Remotely wipe your phone if you lose it

Losing your phone is a painful experience - especially if it provides your daily Flappy Bird fix - but the amount of data contained on our handsets means that having it fall into the wrong hands can have all kinds of negative ramifications.

Google has your back, however, and provides the means to remotely locate and wipe your phone should it go walkabout. Youll need to enable it from the device before you lose it, though - go to the Google Settings application in your app drawer and select Android Device Manager, then turn on "Remotely Locate This Device" and "Allow Remote Lock And Factory Reset".

The latter option also allows you to remotely change the lockscreen password, should you be too scared to wipe the entire device. In the event of your phone going missing, visit the Android Device Manager page online and you can choose to ring (even if the phone is set to silent), lock or wipe the phone.

9) Get the stock Google UI on your non-Nexus handset

Dont have a Nexus device but crave that uncluttered stock experience? Fear not, you dont have to rush out and invest in a brand new blower - you can get the same result by installing KK Launcher from the Google Play market.

Alternatively, you can download the APK file of the Google Experience interface yourself. It’s available from Android Police. Before you install, make sure third-party apps are switched on in the Settings menu. Android blocks third-party installs as standard.

8) Switch launchers quickly

One of Androids big advantages over its rivals is the ability to change your launcher, which essentially means you can drastically alter the way your homescreen looks and behaves.

Previously, switching between launchers was something of a pain, but Google has now added a quick and easy toggle in the settings menu - so now theres no excuse not to try the many amazing launcher alternatives available on the Google Play market.

When you have more than one launcher installed on your phone, the Settings menu will show a new "Home" option - tapping this will bring up all of the available launchers on your device, allowing you to toggle between them quickly and easily.

7) Enable lock screen widgets

Lockscreen widgets are one of Androids more recent innovations, but in Android 4.4 theyre not enabled by default. To turn them on, youll need to drop into Settings > Security and tick the "Enable Widgets" box. To add widgets, simply swipe from left to right on your lockscreen and tap the "plus" icon. You can choose from Gmail, Calendar and Google Keep, amongst other things.

6) Print wirelessly

Regardless of how much we now rely on paperless documents, there comes a time in everyones life when a digitally signed PDF just isnt enough and a hard copy is required.

Android 4.4 thankfully has wireless printing baked-in, with HPs Cloud Printing application doing the heavy lifting. Youll need a compatible printer of course, and only certain apps support the feature at present, but its unquestionably quite handy to be able to send a document through the air and transform it into a physical sheet of paper with nothing but your phone.

5) Gain an easy speed boost by disabling animations

The animations that occur as you move between applications and screens might look pretty, but they can slow you down - especially as they essentially force you to wait a short period before moving to another page or loading an application.

Thankfully, its possible to reduce the time they run for or disable them completely, both of which will make your handset feel faster. Go to Settings > Developer Options and scroll down to the Drawing section. Find the options which refer to animation scale (Window, Transition and Animator) and toggle them all to "Animation Off". Your UI might not be as pretty in motion, but it will be so fast you may even struggle to keep up.

4) Keep an eye on your data usage

Most carriers enforce data allowance limits these days, which means media-hungry mobile owners with their fingers in all kinds of cloud storage pies are at risk of running over and incurring prohibitive fees.

Thank goodness then for Androids built-in data usage monitor, which tells you exactly how much youve been gobbling up via your mobile network. You can set warnings for when youre close to your limit, or have a ceiling that disables data traffic the moment it is reached. You can even specify a day in each month where your allowance renews and reset the data counter to zero accordingly.

3) Link up your cloud storage accounts with Androids Storage Access Framework

Storage Access Framework is basically a grander way of saying all of your data can be accessed from one convenient menu. When youre prompted to locate files youll notice that a side-menu has all of your connected cloud storage accounts - such as Drive, Dropbox and Box - listed, so you can easily pull content from these sources without having to open multiple applications. Its one of Android 4.4s most potent features, yet it has received very little attention.

2) Dismiss an alarm before it bothers you

There are few social situations more awkward that an alarm that you no longer need sounding during a meeting or when youre trying to blend in on public transport. Only appearing in public naked comes close, in our opinion. You may not think its quite that extreme, but youll still be thankful of Android 4.4s advance alarm notification system.

An hour before the alarm is due to fire, youll get a pop-up notification on your screen which allows you to dismiss it before it has chance to sound and make everyone on the bus look at you.

1) Get under the hood with Process Stats

Smartphones are very much like computers in your pocket, and sometimes its nice to get super-detailed in order to get a better understanding of how things are ticking over. In Android 4.4, Google has added a Process Stats section to the Developer Menu, which contains all kinds of information about which apps are running, what processing theyre using and how long theyve been running since you booted up the phone. Its gloriously geeky, and ideal for those who want to fine-tune their handsets performance.

How To Make An Android App Game

With 850,000 new Android devices being activated daily, many keen gamers grow up wanting to develop their own games. Many of them are put off by the coding aspect of software development. With the advent of smartphones and Android Market, the smartphone/tablet software market has started booming, not that the software market has ever been weak. A good enough Android app priced at approximately £2 could easily generate 10,000 downloads or more. Thats £20,000+

It costs $25 to sign up with Android Market as a developer. However, technology companies are hoping that tablet PCs will eventually completely replace laptops and netbooks and become the main way of computing.

What many young potential developers dont realize is that its not an absolute necessity to be able to code in order to get into the software industry. You do not need to be a computer programmer. In fact, there are many software tools available that take the coding aspect completely out of development leaving you with just a set of commands and customizable settings that allow you to build a game or app from scratch, similar to WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) web design tools such as Microsoft Frontpage or Web Expression.

The Coding Method

As most programmers will already know, Android apps and games are based on Java therefore many developers will use the Eclipse IDE (integrated Development Environment) along with the Android SDK (Software Development Kit) plus the ADT plug-in in order to create Android software - sounds stupidly complicated already eh?! To create software programs this way requires a knowledge of coding in Java. Learning this method is advised if you plan to take your software development to a serious level, although it does require a strong understanding of the basic fundamentals of computer programming: variables, integers, functions, methods, loops, etc - this is not as difficult as it first appears to be and is much easier than learning to speak a language like French or Spanish. However, for the beginner there are much easier ways to get started developing your own Android apps which will familiarize you with the way they work and to be honest, trying to use Eclipse even just for the basics can be ridiculously difficult to do and thats if you can even get Eclipse working in the first place which requires about three days of downloading and installing other software to get your development computer set up. Personally, I find Eclipse a complete and utter waste of time.

Google Labs App Inventor

Update: App Inventor has now shut down and is moving to MIT Center for Mobile Learning.

App Inventor is a new online creation facility by Google Labs, that allows users to create Android apps by using a drag and drop interface. You simply load in all the graphics and sound that your app is going to use, arrange it on the screen and select what happens when certain items are clicked. The system is relatively easy to use and compiles your app or game into a downloadable .apk file. The app or game can then be installed on compatible Android devices. People who dont have an understanding of how software programs operate should read the online manual first. Its easy once you know how. The only current disadvantage to App Inventor at the moment is that you are not able to upload your apps or games to Android Market although Google are working on a solution to this. However, you can host the downloads on your own site or elsewhere as most people set their Android devices to allow installation of third party non-market apps to avoid compatibility issues.

Appsgeyser

Appsgeyser is another useful app creation tool that lets you build Android apps or game from already existing content. Appsgeyser is extremely easy to use in that you can simply type in the web address (url) of your own website and Appsgeyser will automatically convert it into an Android app for you. However, you should ensure that the pages of your site are set to the correct size for a standard Android app or the pages will be too big to fit the screen. Appsgeyser also allows you to monetize your apps either by placing ads in your app or selling them ad-free via the Appsgeyser network. They also have free educational resources that they claim can help lead your app towards success. Rather interestingly, Appsgeyser also supports HTML 5 to add advanced features, the ability to send pop-up notifications to your apps and advanced statistics so you can see how many times your app has been installed.

Once you have finished building your Android app Appsgeyser then allows you to download the .apk file which is the installation file that will be downloaded to Android devices. If you so wish you can then upload this file to sites such as Google Play (Android Market) and SlideMe Market. Any apps made with Appsgeyser are automatically hosted on their own network.

Andromo

Note: Andromo have now started charging a subscription fee for their service. For anyone who already has apps made at Andromo, this now means that you can no longer even update your apps unless you pay for a subscription. Whilst discount rates have been offered to already existing members I cant help feeling a bit ripped off by Andromos secret plans. I would therefore now recommend one of the other services.

Thirdly and finally, Andromo is yet another online tool that lets users create their own Android app for free with no programming or coding skills required. Andromo lets you mix and match a variety of features and components that allow you to build your own professional Android app plus more features are continuously being added. Andromo supports interactive maps, photo galleries, blogs and feeds, video playlists, custom pages, websites, HTML & CSS, MP3 music, soundboards and much more making it a full-on WYSIWIG Android app creation tool. Andromo claim that their users have, so far, created 9,398 apps which have been built 12,719 times (at the time of writing). Andromo had over 11,000 users sign up within a few weeks of going into beta.

As with Appsgeyser, Andromo lets you download the .apk file of your app which you can then upload to your choice of Android Market. There are also options to include your own advertising in your apps so that you can earn money from them.

Uploading To Android Markets

Once youve got your .apk file which is ready for installation on Android devices, the next step is to get them hosted online. Although both Appsgeyser and Andromo have their own networks where your app can be downloaded by users, you can reach an even wider audience by uploading it to the Android Markets, of which there are several:

Google Play (previously Android Market) - Google charge a $25 for anyone who wishes to sign up as a developer. There are also restrictions and requirements for your app which you need to check before uploading your app.

SlideMe Market (Original Android Market) - SlideMe claim to be the original Android Market and claim that they were in existence before Google Play/Android Market. SlideMe Market is a simple solution for those just getting started in Android development, as you can sign up for free and upload your apps straight away. Each app must have at least two images associated with it - an icon and a screenshot. As long as these requirements are met then you should have no problem publishing your app.

TechNewport Market (New) - If you experience any problems uploading to Google Play or SlideMe then your third option is to upload to TechNewport Android Market. There are currently only a small collection of apps available as the site is independent and relatively new. However, the only restriction imposed by this service is a 5MB file upload size. Your app should also have an icon and a screenshot.

Virtual SD card on Android

Since Android Honeycomb, Google changed the way to manage internal memory on Android devices. Before Honeycomb, every user had one separate partition on his device called userdata (/data), where he could install applications and where all user settings were stored (home Lcds, applications data, contacts, and all the rest you loose after doing so called "full wipe" on your device). Apart of userdata partition, all Android devices had microSD card slot to save pictures, movies, backups etc.. Now it looks completely different, but lets start from the beginning. There are several approaches to this subject, Ill present here all those I am aware of.

  • userdata partition + microSD card

This is the mentioned above pre-Honeycomb approach. There is userdata partition, where you can install all your applications and you also have a possibility to insert microSD card. Nothing more to explain. Only devices running Android Gingerbread and older versions have such configuration, so its getting less and less popular.

  • userdata partition + virtual SD card on userdata partition

This is the new approach presented for the first time in Honeycomb. Instead of having /data partition together with expandable microSD card slot of any capacity, Google decided for something different. Instead, /data partition became very large (16/32/64 GB) and inside you can find /data/media folder that contains all the files you can see as your SD card content. How does it work? Without too much technical explanations, there is so called fuse tool which emulates media folder inside userdata partition as a separate storage device. As a result, after connecting smartphone to the PC you can browse the content of /data/media location, so if it was a microSD card. The biggest downside of such approach is a high risk of loosing all your virtual SD card content in case of any serious /data partition failure. Also, such partition cant be formatted with mkfs.ext4 without loosing content of virtual SD card, because you cant format device partition just partially. You can use e2fsck tool to check for potential errors, but sometimes partition format is the only way out. How does "full wipe" work then? Well, its a little bit complicated. First of all, you cant format mounted (in use) partition. You need to unmount it first. Once unmounted userdata partition, you cant flash any ZIP file from inside recovery, because ZIPs files are stored on virtual SD card (/data/media) and remember that userdata partition is currently unmounted, because we want to format it. There is a workaround for it - you can run mkfs.ext4 from inside /cache partition or you can use command prompt. Now, what if you need to remove the whole content of your userdata partition, but you want to keep virtual SD card content at the same time? There is a workaround for this as well, but instead of formatting entire partition, you need to remove all files excluding /data/media location. Example:

#!/tmp/bash
# Remove content of /data partition excluding data/media files
cd /data
FILES=(*)
for i in *; do
if [ "$i" != "media" ]
then rm -R "$i"
fi
done

This way you can sort of wipe userdata, but it doesnt format the partition, so you cant fix broken file-system with it.  Why this point is the longest one? Because it took me quite a few words to explain the relation between virtual SD card and media folder on userdata partition (/data/media). So basically, what you read here applies to every configuration with virtual SD card emulated on userdata partition.

  • userdata partition + virtual SD card on a separate partition

This approach is not very popular, and its a shame because it seems to be much more practical rather than the previous one. Instead of emulating SD card from userdata partition, there is a separate, large partition with vFAT file-system. That means you can format your userdata partition anytime you want without loosing content of your virtual SD card, or from inside custom ROM, because userdata can be freely unmounted. The only device Ive seen so far with this approach was HTC One X.

  • userdata partition + virtual SD card on userdata partition + microSD card

This seems to be the most desirable solution for many Android users. It works similar to approach described in the second point, so everything I wrote about /data/media is valid here as well. However, every user have the ability to insert extra microSD card inside his device, so he can easily backup virtual SD card to microSD card or format userdata partition without loosing all pictures etc. (if previously stored on microSD card). This is the most common configuration for Samsung devices. But having removable microSD card is not only an advantage. First of all, any kind of microSD card (even SDHC) will be always slower than internal eMMC memory. It depends on many factors like card speed (class 2, 4, 6, 8 or even 10), on-board controller, I/O scheduler and more. Secondly, microSD card damage risk is higher then damage risk of internal eMMC memory. Out of question is the benefit to expand the memory with 64 GB microSD card, but its definitely the minority of power users, who are buying large capacity cards. For the vast majority of users, internal memory with 32 GB capacity is more then enough to store their favorite music or pictures.

  • userdata partition + virtual SD card on a separate partition + microSD card

This approach is theoretically possible, but personally Ive never seen device with such combination. For me, this is the best combination. You have possibility to use external microSD card and virtual SD card is not a part of userdata partition, but it has its own, separate vFat partition. Such configuration gives you control over all your data and possibility to manage it however you want.
